Project Summary
TADEK was to undertake a structured technical comparison between the PelaFlex Tension Leg Platform (TLP) and an independently defined Semi-Submersible Floating Offshore Wind Platform.
A reference Semi-Sub concept was engineered to enable a defensible, like-for-like benchmark. The study considered floater sizing, assembly, quayside operations, tow stability, installation methodology and operational performance in representative Celtic Sea conditions.
The Challenge
A technically robust benchmark was required to differentiate two fundamentally different floating concepts, with the following challenges:
- Little publicly available information available on semi-sub design properties
- Distinct stability philosophies (tension-leg vs column-stabilised)
- Lifecycle implications from fabrication to operation required alignment
- Material efficiency and spatial footprint required quantification
TADEK‘s Role
TADEK was appointed to perform a benchmarking study between a reference semi-sub and the Pelaflex.
- Engineered a reference Semi-Submersible for fair comparison
- Established consistent technical assessment criteria
- Developed hydrodynamic and tow-out simulation models
- Assessed constructability, port logistics and installation strategy
- Delivered structured technical conclusions and recommendations
Our Approach
The assessment combined first-principles hydrodynamics with practical constructability analysis.
- Floater geometry optimisation using in-house 1st principle sizing tools
- Diffraction analysis and motion response modelling
- Time-domain tow-out simulations in OrcaFlex
- Port, assembly and quayside constraint evaluation
- Annual workability assessment in representative Celtic Sea conditions
Outcomes
The study provided clear, evidence-based differentiation between platform concepts.
- PelaFlex demonstrated superior material efficiency and reduced footprint
- Assembly and port-stage advantages were quantified
- TLP performance sensitivities were identified and design improvements suggested to client
- Findings informed strategic design refinement and market positioning
