Deepwater FPSO Riser Replacement Analysis & Engineering

Project Summary

Tadek provided integrated engineering analysis, project engineering, and offshore engineering support for the recovery of two risers, installation of one riser and one jumper, and several subsea disconnection and tie-in works on the Åsgard A FPSO in the North Sea — all while the field remained in production.

Tadek’s integrated analysis and project engineering teams enabled safe execution & rapid adaptation to offshore challenges under complex operational constraints.

The Challenge

The scope presented multiple, interlinked technical challenges:

  • Live FPSO operations with stringent production integrity and safety constraints
  • FPSO on locked heading during pull-in/out operations during winter operations
  • Deepwater riser recovery and installation in a highly congested subsea environment with limited tolerances
  • Data uncertainty due to ageing riser ancillaries – loss of buoyancy and marine growth
  • Short-notice engineering changes driven by offshore discoveries required rapid procedural updates and re-analysis onboard

Tadek’s Role

Tadek was tasked with delivering engineering on an expedited timeline, followed by field engineering and analysis support on the FPSO and the OCV. The scope included:

  • Installation analysis of each operation, including detailed lay tables and operability of all key stages.
  • ICARUS tie-in and disconnection analysis.
  • Development of procedures, storyboards & rigging arrangements for all operations.
  • Design and management of bespoke tooling and equipment scopes.
  • Technical evaluation of fabricator and supplier tenders.

Our Approach

Tadek’s approach was founded on industry-recognized practices, disciplined analysis, and collaboration with the operations team.

  • Riser recovery and installation sequences were optimised using static and dynamic analysis to maintain product integrity and vessel equipment limits.
  • Procedures were developed to translate analysis outputs directly into offshore execution steps, with clear hold points and verification checks
  • Close technical liaison with the FPSO contractor ensured alignment on interfaces, tooling and topside operations
  • Analysis engineers onboard the vessel updated models and generated dynamic simulations using live metocean forecasts

Outcomes

  • Successful recovery of two production risers and installation of a new riser and static jumper
  • Safe and controlled execution of ICARUS tie-in operations under live production conditions
  • No schedule impact despite multiple offshore engineering challenges
  • Bespoke tooling solutions engineered, fabricated and deployed offshore
  • Analysis engineer onboard provided technical direction to the Shift Supervisor during key stages
  • Maintained full engineering control throughout execution, from analysis to as-built documentation

“Tadek team developed significantly throughout the execution of this project. Being first time involved with riser work the team grasped the concepts and ran with a solution minded approach. For the final scopes of work the execution, deliveries and quality were outstanding. I will have no hesitation working with Tadek engineering team going forward.”
