FOW Dynamic Cable Design

Project Summary

TADEK delivered a pre-FEED inter-array cable (IAC) design for a 500 MW floating offshore wind (FOW) array as part of a COP project. The scope included dynamic cable configuration optioneering, structural analysis, array layout optimisation and early-stage procurement engagement covering the full system from seabed to hang-off.

The Challenge

Designing an inter-array cable system for floating wind required balancing electrical performance, structural resilience and installation practicality in an emerging supply chain environment.

  • Integrate cable behaviour with floating platform motions and mooring dynamics.
  • Ensure fatigue resistance and structural integrity under extreme offshore conditions.
  • Optimise array layout to avoid clashes with moorings and subsea infrastructure.
  • Evaluate configurations and cable capacities while navigating limited supplier data and early-stage pricing transparency

TADEK‘s Role

TADEK acted as the engineering lead for the pre-FEED dynamic cable system design, delivering technical analysis and procurement insight.

  • Developed the inter-array cable configuration and dynamic behaviour modelling.
  • Performed ULS and fatigue assessments for long-term structural reliability.
  • Optimised array layout for installation feasibility and asset clearance.
  • Engaged suppliers to inform early-stage procurement strategy and cost modelling.

Our Approach

A structured engineering workflow was applied to integrate platform dynamics, cable design and installation considerations.

  • Conducted iterative analysis linking mooring performance with cable response.
  • Performed configuration optioneering to assess dynamic cable concepts.
  • Designed tailored cable cross-sections using TADEK’s PreCAB software.
  • Applied ULS and fatigue analysis to validate long-term structural performance.
  • Liaised with suppliers to refine component feasibility and cost assumptions.

Outcomes

The study delivered a technically robust and commercially informed cable design ready to support project development.

  • Validated a pliant/lazy wave configuration to decouple platform motion and protect cable integrity.
  • Identified strategic use of lower-capacity cables within strings to optimise costs.
  • Produced an installation-ready array layout reducing clash risks with moorings and anchors.
  • Delivered a comprehensive pre-FEED design report supporting the project’s next development phase.

“Working with Tadek has been a real pleasure; they are a team of highly skilled and knowledgeable professionals, with whom it was easy to establish an open and reliable line of communication.

Tadek helped us successfully deliver the IAC part of a floating wind preFEED project, that was a first-off for us. I very much appreciated Tadek’s pragmatic approach and will surely select Tadek again in the future.”
